The First Move Toward a Healthier Church

The First Move Toward a Healthier Church

Every pastor I meet wants a healthier church. Almost none of them are sure where to begin. So they reach for the thing in front of them: a new series, a new program, a new push. And a season later they are just as tired, wondering why nothing really changed.

Here is what I have learned. A healthy church is not the result of the right program. It is the overflow of a healthy leader making honest assessments in the right order.

Health starts with the leader

You cannot lead a church to a place you are not willing to go yourself. Before we talk strategy, we have to talk about the person carrying the weight. Are you rested? Are you honest? Do you have someone in your life who can tell you the truth?

The research is sobering. Pastors are more isolated, more exhausted, and more likely to quit than at almost any point in modern ministry. That is not a strategy problem. It is a soul problem, and it has to be addressed first.

Then take an honest assessment

Once the leader is being cared for, health becomes a matter of looking clearly at six areas that shape every congregation:

You cannot fix what you refuse to measure.

Most churches are strong in two or three of these and quietly stuck in the rest. The goal is not to panic about all six. It is to name the one that needs attention next, and to move.

The next step

That is exactly what the free church health assessment is for. In about five minutes it will help you and your team see where you are gaining ground and where you are not, and give you a first step for the area that needs it most.

Health is not a program. It is a series of honest, Spirit-led next steps, taken in the right order, starting with you.
